The talk shortly presents current understanding of the role of water bodies in the Earth’s climate system, as well as the gaps in our knowledge to be addressed in coming years. The key tool to evaluate lake-atmosphere interactions considered is mathematical modelling, and the basic approaches to treat both thermodynamic and biogeochemical processes in freshwater aquatic systems are described. The interaction between observational and modelling studies is discussed. Issues arising when implementing lake parameterizations in Earth System models are listed and perspectives of fully coupled lake-climate simulations are drawn.
